Play Windows Games With Proton/Steam Play Thanks to a new tool from Valve called Proton, which leverages the WINE compatibility layer, many Windows-based games are completely playable on Linux through Steam Play. Those games are cleared to run under Proton, and playing them should be as easy as clicking Install.
Can Steam proton run non Steam games?
Proton only work with Windows games, but if you want to run a native Linux game, choose Steam Linux Runtime from the list instead of Proton. Proton Experimental contains experimental version of Proton which can help with running new games.
How do I run a Windows game with a proton?
It’s easy. Simply go back to the Compatability settings described above, and in the drop-down menu, select the version of Proton that you want. Exit out of the Properties window and launch your game. Steam might need time to download and install the version of Proton that you chose.

- Go to add a game and add the game executable from the folder it is contained.
- Go to the games properties on Steam and force Proton use.
- Go to Launch options and Add –wine or –proton to the box.
- Hope it works and enjoy.

Which version of Proton should I use?
You should use the Steam Proton version that is recommended by Steam itself: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton right now. However, for testing purposes, I like to use 3.16-4 BETA. For this guide, we will be going with 3.16-4 BETA.
