If there is another player’s settlement at the end of one of your roads you may not build past it. When someone builds a settlement in the middle of another player’s road, the road is split in two. This can cause the Longest Road bonus card to shift to a different player, including the person who built the settlement.

Is it OK to build settlements between roads?
Scenario 1 is allowed, 2 is not. As others have stated, the first scenario is allowed, and in fact used as an example of how settlements can be used to break up roads in some editions of the manual.
How to test for clay in road settlement?
You need to do 4 m deep borings with SPT, and obtain moisture and hand penetrometer readings, say every 50 m along the road. Take some on left side of the centerline and some on the right side. Then look to see if you have SPT > 10. If you hit clay, look for qu > 1.0 kg/cm^2. Take few Atterberg tests if you hit clay in the upper 5 m.
