Unlike other Mythical Pokémon, both Meltan and Melmetal can be placed at Gyms to defend them.
Can I use legendary Pokemon in raids?
Legendary Raid Pokémon have the highest CP of any Raid creature. Once you have captured the Legendary, you cannot use it to defend Gyms – but they can of course attack with them in subsequent Raids.
Can you use mythical Pokemon in battles?
Mythical Pokémon are not permitted in battle.
Can I put Mew in a gym?
Legendary Pokémon cannot be put in gyms, and Mew is canonically a Mythical Pokémon (which is a subset of Legendary, according to Sun & Moon’s internal data and in-game Pokédex).

Can you use Mewtwo in ranked battles?
The Pokemon Sword & Shield community was left divided over Game Freak’s decision to allow powerful restricted Legendaries such as Mewtwo and Kyogre into ranked online battles. Game Freak / The Pokemon Company Sword & Shield Legendary Zacian can now be used in ranked online battles.
Why can’t I put my Mewtwo in a gym?
Legendaries of that caliber are rightfully banned from being put into gyms due to their sheer power, especially for newer players who wouldn’t stand a chance against a 3000+ CP Mewtwo (or something on that level) in a gym.
Can you use multiple Legendary Pokemon in a gym battle?
Yes, it is perfectly possible to do this. I just used an Articuno to attack a gym, myself. You can also use multiples of the same legendary in a gym battle. The most extreme case is shown in this video:
What happens to your Pokemon after a gym battle?
After a battle, your Pokemon may be left with low HP, or worse, have fainted! They unfortunately will not heal on their own and will need your intervention. Note that Pokemon can only faint in rival Gym Battles – and training with the friendly Gym will only lower your Pokemon’s health to 1.
Can a gymleader sleep during a Pokemon battle?
Both challengers and gymleaders are not allowed to use items during a battle. (This excludes held items.) Only one pokemon on either players’ team can be asleep at a time. (This excludes self induced sleep.) E.g. This is not allowed but This is Challengers are only allowed to bring one of each pokemon to the gym battle.
How many Pokemon can you bring to a gym in Pokemon Go?
The usual rock-paper-scissor Pokemon rules are followed during battles in Pokemon GO. When challenging an enemy Gym, you can bring six Pokemon with you. If you are training at a friendly Gym, you’ll only be allowed one Pokemon – so pick the one who can endure the most. Look at what types of Pokemon you’ll be facing and plan accordingly.
