World of Warcraft is not sold separately, only the latest expansion (currently Shadowlands) is sold separately. If you start a subscription or you buy game time, you immediately have access to all previous World of Warcraft expansions, and you can play all the content and all the maps up to level 50.
Can you use WOW tokens to buy expansions?
Yes, you can. I bought the “Epic Edition” by buying tokens and using them to add to my Battlenet balance.
Do I need to buy all expansions wow?
No, you only need to buy the current expansion. Once shadowlands launches it becomes the current expansion, meaning all those before it are included in the base sub. Currently as shadowlands is not out, Legion is the most recent expansion included in the base sub.

WoW Tokens are sold in the order they are listed on the Auction House. You will always receive the amount of gold you were quoted when putting the token up for sale. If a token you posted does not sell after two weeks, contact Customer Support to check the status.
Can you convert WoW tokens to real money?
Gold Can only be exchanged for a WoW Token which then can be turned into bnet Balance. bnet balance can be used to purchase any battle.net digital goods, including games and services, or whatever else they have on their digital shop. Returns do not turn into real money, it will just return to your bnet balance.
