Currently, when a Commander dies, players are given a choice: put the Commander in the graveyard, where it can trigger its dies abilities; or returns it directly to the command zone, where it does not trigger its dies abilities.

If you let your Commander go to the Grave, its there until something tries to move it to another zone. The exact rule reads “If a Commander would be put into a library, hand, graveyard or exile from anywhere, its owner may choose to move it to the command zone instead”.
