Currently barriers block rain and snow fall and prevent it from reaching blocks underneath. Barrier walls and ceilings become very obvious if they prevent weather effects from reaching the ground, especially due to the rain splashes generated on top of them when they’re hit by rain.
How do you keep snow off blocks in Minecraft?
A combination of the below:
- recessed stairs/slabs: snow won’t settle on transparent blocks.
- lots of lighting: snow will melt 3 blocks away from lava/glowstone, and 2 from torches, plus it won’t settle an additional 2 blocks away.
- overhead canopies: snow settles on these instead, or not if made from stairs/slabs.
Can snow form on slabs?
It’s not possible for snow to exist on slabs/half steps. A slab is only ½ blocks high, but as far as the game is concerned, it inhabits an entire block. The same goes for the snow layer, which is also a block — except other blocks you place can go through and replace the snow layer block.
Does snow cover glass in Minecraft?
As of 1.14. 4 the snow layers on glass and also doesn’t allow light to come through. This effectively breaks skylights. On the other hand skylights aren’t needed for iron farms or villager breeding.

It will snow on upper slabs as the top surface of the block is solid. It will not snow on lower slabs. I tested several blocks that don’t have a solid top as well as ice. Blocks without a solid top will not be snowed on. Packed and solid ice will not be snowed on.
