Followers do not benefit from Legendary Gems equipped on them except Esoteric Alteration & Mutilation Guard.
Do follower stats affect you?
While your follower can equip items with any stat on it, there are a few stats that your follower simply will gain no benefit from at all. The stats are: Any Stat Involving Player Resources (IE: Healed per Fury Spent, Increased Wrath Regeneration, etc) Movement Speed.
Do legendary gems work with followers?

Boon of the Hoarder is a Legendary Gem in Diablo III. It can only be socketed into Amulets and Rings. This gem will have no effect in Greater Rifts. It will also not trigger off of kills made by anyone other than the Nephalem hero who uses this gem, even their own followers.

Are there any gems that do not work for followers?
Emeralds do not work very well for the followers because their critical chance is way too low compared to the Nephalem. So the Critical Damage Increment buff goes to waste for them. (But for the Scoundrel you can try Emerald becuase his abilities are build around Crits).
Do you get gems for followers in Diablo 3?
Items equipped on your followers do benefit from socketed gems. The wiki entry on followers doesn’t go into detail, but followers do benefit from equipment and gems just like your character does. You can test this by letting your follower attack enemies with and without emeralds, and counting the damage of criticals (which I have done, sadly).
Are there legendary gem multipliers that work on followers?
Legendary gem multipliers like Bane of the Trapped, Legacy of Dreams etc. don’t work. Followers never deal any significant damage. Ring of Royal Grandeur works on Followers. The Executioner doesn’t work on Followers. Ahavarion, Spear of Lycander only works if the Follower gets the kill, rendering it useless. Strongarm Bracers work on Followers!
Do You benefit from gems that do not?
However, it’s not strictly true to say that there is no benefit from using the other gems, as strength and dexterity still increases armor for an intelligence-based character, and intelligence increases all resist. But since the primary stat has both the offensive and defensive perks, you should go with that one.
