Short Answer: No. Expanded Answer: The Ys series is by and large episodic in nature. Each game is a self contained story that generally follows the template of “Globetrotting adventurer Adol arrives in new place and gets wrapped up in local hubbub”.
Can you play Ys VIII without playing the others?
Since Seven is already out, I highly recommend you try it before playing Lacrimosa of Dana, but it’s definitely not a requirement, you can jump straight to VIII without having played any other Ys game.
