A blocking creature assigns combat damage among the attacking creatures it blocks, which is one creature except in the case of certain abilities. Attacking creatures that are blocked but have the blocking creature removed from combat before the Damage Assignment Step deal no combat damage.
Does blocking count as attacking MTG?
Unlike attacking, the act of blocking does not cause the blocking creatures to tap, and creatures with summoning sickness can block. Each creature can only block a single attacker, but the defending player may choose to block an attacking creature with more than one creature.
Does Lifelink count for Blocking?
Yes. Any damage dealt by a creature with lifelink causes its controller to gain that much life, including combat damage dealt by such a creature while blocking.
Can you block with a creature you just played?
Regarding the original question: The only requirements for a creature to be able to block are that it must be untapped (unless an effect says otherwise) and that it must legally be able to block the intended attacking creature when accounting for evasion, protection, and similar.
Can a creature be destroyed if it is a blocking creature?
Venom’s ability doesn’t state that the creature being destroyed must be a blocking creature, so it doesn’t matter if it left combat (because of regeneration or otherwise). Even if it did, it wouldn’t matter because of rule 603.7c:
What happens when a creature is removed from combat?
I know that regenerating a creature removes it from combat, and I know if the regenerated creature had been assigned as a blocker, the creature it blocked remains blocked after regeneration (i.e. it doesn’t damage the defending player unless it has trample).
What happens when a creature is dealt lethal damage?
Adding up all the damage a creature has taken over the entire turn, if a creature has been dealt lethal damage, it is destroyed. Note what I just said there: lethal damage is another way a creature is “destroyed” within the meaning of the rules. This is important because regeneration cares about this.
What happens to a creature that is destroyed by Deathtouch?
If something is indestructible, it simply can’t be destroyed. So, destroy effects (whether they say anything about regeneration or not), lethal damage, and deathtouch don’t destroy it. This doesn’t cause the creature to become tapped, leave combat, or anything like that stuff involved with regeneration.
