Historically the grading system that Magic uses today comes from the grading of baseball cards. The Inquest Gamer magazine adopted the Baseball cards grading system for Magic cards as early as 1995. Early on the accepted grades were Mint, Near Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor.
What is a good card grade?
Anything above a 9 is worth book value or greater, as BGS 9 (known as a “Mint 9”) is the condition expected of the card out of the pack. A grade of 9.5 is Gem-Mint, which is a card that is nearly flawless. This is the condition most collectors want. Then there is a “PRISTINE 10” which is the holy grail of cardboard.

Is it worth getting Magic cards graded?
Our general rule of thumb is to only grade a card if it will add more value to the card than the grading costs. On cards that are over $1000 dollars ungraded, we think it’s generally worth grading the card no matter what if you are looking to sell the card at some point in the future.
Is PSA or BGS better?
While PSA gets the lion’s share from consumers, Beckett Grading Services is no slouch in the grading industry either. This company has two advantages over its main competitor: a better-looking label and a faster turnaround time. Most BGS slabs sport a multi-detail label at the top.

Is Beckett harder than PSA?
Pros: Beckett’s labeling is generally preferred, and it’s easy to see why when you compare their offerings to the PSA equivalents. They’ve seen a great option for newer cards. BGS is tougher on centering, especially for Gem Mint cards.
Is BGS 9.5 the same as PSA 10?
PSA 10’s routinely sell for as much as 2.5x their BGS 9.5 counterpart. While there’s a lot of collectors who love to boast about how they prefer BGS for their PC because they prefer the look and quality of the BGS slab none of those same people will argue the value for PSA 10 is greater than BGS 9.5. It’s just a fact.
Is it worth it to grade Magic cards?
Most common cards even from the oldest sets in Magic like Alpha or Beta need to achieve an overall grade of 9.5 to add $50 dollars in value. Is getting cards graded worth it?
Usually, it does not make sense to get a card graded unless it is very old or in near perfect condition. Getting cards professionally graded is expensive and may even reduce the value of the card.

What’s the weight of a standard magic card?
A standard Magic cards weight (on my scale) around 1.73 g – the variation is usually in the order of 0.02g. This test is quick and easy and it is usually a good starting point. Rebacked cards (like the Alpha Timetwister in the third picture) normally fail this test.
How are the cards graded in Magic The Gathering?
