What every commander deck should have?
After those five, I have five more that should start as part of every Commander deck you make.
- Sol Ring. If you have played Commander, you knew this card was going to be on a list of Super Staples.
- Solemn Simulacrum.
- Command Beacon.
- Chromatic Lantern.
- Command Tower.
- Cyclonic Rift.
- Swords to Plowshares.
- Demonic Tutor.
Can you have your Commander in your deck?
Short answer: No. Longer answer: No, the command zone tends to offer enough advantage as is, and having to track which creature is your Commander can be annoying and unfair to opponents (similarly to why you shouldn’t shuffle morph creatures around).
How many lands should you have in a 5-color Commander deck?
Most decks will require 3-5 Lands to get going as plenty of Commanders fall within this cost range. Now assuming we want pretty good odds (75% chance and above) to draw 3-5 Lands in our opening hand, and that everyone gets 1 free Mulligan, then the optimal number of Lands to have in your deck is 37.
How many lands should be in a 5-color Commander deck?
This could mean running more than the usual 37-38 land, or it could mean putting some additional Rampant Growth effects and mana rocks in the deck. It really depends on what your deck wants to do and what turns are critical for you.
