A Nintendo Network ID is required to download game demos and other free software. If you previously formatted your Nintendo 3DS family system and are redownloading content that was purchased while you had a Nintendo Network ID associated with your system, that ID must be relinked to your Nintendo 3DS family system.
Do you need a Nintendo Account to play digital games?

How to unlink a Nintendo Network ID ( NNID )?
To unlink an NNID from your Nintendo Account, click the checkmark next to “Nintendo Network ID” to remove the link. If you created your Nintendo Account with your NNID, you will need to link an additional service (different NNID, Twitter, etc) OR create a Nintendo Account password before you can remove the link.
Can you download old games to your Nintendo Switch?
You can use it to sign into your account instead of your email address. If you have an old Nintendo Network ID, you might have a bunch of old games and purchases tied to it. Fortunately, you can bring those over to your Nintendo Account—though it’s unclear just yet if that means you’ll be able to download those purchases to your Switch.
