While mining, simply place the silk touch pickaxe in any main-hand slots and equip the fortune pickaxe in the offhand. However, if you keep the alternative pickaxe in your off-hand and use that shortcut, you can switch between both tools more efficiently.

Currently in the game the only weapon you are able to enchant with looting are swords. Even though there are much more weapons in the game you still need to duel-wield them with your sword to be able to get the looting effect.

Nope, no carry-able light source. As the one poster said there was a sweet mod that makes torches produce light around you when held. For now if you want a poor mans lanter you have to use flint and steel, though, I recommended only using it underground.

Technically, it uses your off-hand if right-clicking with your main hand does nothing at the moment. E.g. if you carry a block and try to place it inside your feet, your off-hand will be used.
