- Using WinRAR, or 7-zip, extract the folder named ‘Stonesense’ that is located in the .
- Run Dwarf Fortress, and load up a game.
- Double click the Stonesense icon to run the visualiser.

Why is Stonesense not included in the starter pack?
So this is the result of outdated documentation and a timely bug. First, Stonesense is now included with DFHack in the Starter Pack (previously known as the LNP ). However from around versions 40.14-40.19 stonesense was broken due to changes in DF proper, so it wasn’t shipped.
What do you need to know about Stonesense?
Stonesense is a third party visualizer, implemented as a DFHack plugin, that lets you view your Dwarf Fortress world in a classic isometric perspective. There is an official thread for feedback, questions, requests or bug reports.
Why is Stonesense not loading creatures large 256.png?
If Stonesense gives an error saying that it can’t load creatures/large_256/*.png, your video card cannot handle the high detail sprites used. Either open creatures/init.txt and remove the line containing that folder, or use these smaller sprites.
What do you do with Stonesense in DFHack?
The DFHack command stonesense (or ssense) opens Stonesense in a new window. This viewer window has read-only access to the game, and can follow the game view, or be moved independently. stonesense overlay replaces the map section of your DF window. Note that it’s not (yet) suitable for use as your only interface.
