The detonator is a secondary weapon for pyro, it’s similar to the flare gun. This weapon will reload automatically when not active. Thanks to the detonate function, the detonator can hit enemies behind cover. The detonator is much better at long-range spy checking than the flare gun as it is harder to dodge.

Normally, it will deal 65 damage. This is enough to kill a Medic in 3 hits, giving him quite some time to react. A mini-crit will deal 88 damage. This is enough to kill a Medic in 2 hits, giving him approximately 1.6 seconds to react.

I did find that the detonator is useful in terms of combat effectiveness when used in tandem with fire AND reflected projectiles. The fire and rockets alone deal a little over 130-150, and adding another 30 is really just icing in the cake to secure a kill.
