Why can’t I defeat Alduin?
In the Alduin fight, there are three NPCs attacking him along with you. They may not be able to overcome his Dragonskin like you can, but all three are marked Essential, meaning they cannot die. Let them get the first couple of hits in on Alduin, and he should keep his focus on them for a while.
Can you spare alduin?
There is the option to tell Arngeir that Paarthurnax must die or that he is going to be spared. It is possible to kill Paarthurnax directly after the quest “Alduin’s Bane,” since he is no longer an essential character.

After the cutscene end, you should note that in the meantime, Alduin has reached The Throat of the World (screen above). You need to prepare for the battle with this dragon, as press TAB, choose Magic and set Dragonrend as active (it’s also worth to add it to your favourites).
How does Alduin’s breath attack work in Elder Scrolls?
Like all dragons, Alduin’s breath attack relies on his magicka pool. A barrage of shock spells can potentially deplete his reserves to a point where he is only able to do physical attacks. Alduin can be prevented from shouting the meteor storm by using Dragonrend as soon as he is seen.

The key to success will be of course forcing Alduin to land by using the Dragonrend Shout. Remember to always wait for a good moment o use the Shout, so you don’t waste any charge.
