Your CS:GO profile rank is displayed above your competitive skill group and increases through match XP. Match XP is earned in both casual and competitive matchmaking and is earned after the match has concluded. Max profile rank is 40.
How big can the rank difference be in CS:GO?
You’ll now be able to play as many matches as you like, but can only queue with players within five ranks higher or lower of your own (once again, excluding a premade team of five).

To unlock competitive matchmaking, you must first reach level two by playing any of the game modes created by Valve: Casual, Arms Race, Demolition, Danger Zone, and Deathmatch. Attaining level two will grant you access to matchmaking, where CS:GO’s finest can be found.

Every player with no matchmaking experience has to win 10 matches before getting his rank. He can either play alone or group with other 4 players (grouping with less players is not possible). An unranked player will start playing with a default amount of ELO points.
Do you have to play multiple matches to get to Top Rank?
Players will have to play multiple matches at the top rank to prove they belong there. For players outside of the the top two ranks, your rank will not be lowered to start the act. Additionally, you’ll only be required to play one placement match to display your rank, down from the previously used five.

The option to enter Competitive matchmaking will open once you’ve completed 20 Unrated matches. Consider this a necessary warmup before the sweat starts. Our rank and competitive matchmaking system is meant to deliver a balanced fight and keep the disruption to a minimum. Factoring in your total performance also helps us better detect smurfs, prevent rank boosting, and get to an accurate display of your skill (rank) much quicker.
