As mentioned, this was changed when Magic 2010 was released. Combat damage does not use the stack, and it is dealt immediately after it is assigned. Anything that you intend to play before a creatures deal or receive combat damage now have to played before combat damage is assigned.
How does damage resolve in MTG?
Damage dealt to creatures is removed from the creature at the end of each turn, unless the total damage dealt to that creature over the course of the turn equals or exceeds its toughness, which causes the creature to be destroyed and put into the graveyard unless another effect replaces this.
